“I don’t have time to read,” “Every time I try to read, I fall asleep!” “I know I should read, but it is so much easier to scroll through social media instead.”

We all know that it is important to read, but finding the time and motivation can be really hard. Here are some of our top tips on how to create a reading habit.

Top Five Ways to Create A Reading Habit

  1. Read a certain number of pages every day – Building a consistent reading effort can be difficult at first, but with a reasonable goal for each day, it is amazing how much you can read within a week, month and year!
  2. Set aside a constant time of day to pick up a book – for example, in the morning after Fajr prayers when its quiet and your mind is fresh. At the same time, be opportunistic! Carry a book with you or keep one in the car. When you are early to pick up the kids, or sitting in a waiting room, pick up a book for 5 minutes, instead of scrolling through social media!
  3. Broaden your horizons – Have a go at reading a genre you’re wouldn’t usually pick up – you might be pleasantly surprised. Keeping your reading varied and diverse makes life interesting!
  4. Read Socially – join a book club, listen to podcasts about books, get recommendations from friends and enjoy discussing what you have read with others. It’s a great way to keep the momentum going and cement your learning.
  5. Supplement your reading with audiobooks – when you are driving, cooking or sitting down for a quick cuppa, an audiobook can be so relaxing.
